Villajoyosa History: Villajoyosa is the historic capital of the Marina Baixa district and the town has a long and interesting history. The history of Villajoyosa goes back to the 6th Century BC when it was the site of an Iberian town possibly called 'Alonis' (the ancient Greeks referred to Alonis), it may also have been settled by the Phoenicians who set up towns along this important Mediterranean trade route. The Romans followed and remained until the 6th Century AD, the Romans set up a fish-salting industry in the town.
The town is thought to have fallen into decline during the Arab occupation of Spain and very few artefacts have been found from before 1300. Villajoyosa as it is known today was founded by Bernat de Sarrià, Admiral of the Kingdom of Aragon's Navy and a nobleman in the service of King Jaume II "the Just", the new town being built on the same hill as the 2000 year old Iberian one in around 1293. Villajoyosa (whose name means 'joyful town') was granted its town charter in 1300 (March 8th) in Barcelona.
In the 14th Century the town was granted the privilege to trade olive oil, cereals, wine and fruit by King Pedro IV and was at that time the only port in the region permitted to do so, it was named as a 'Royal Town' in 1433. During the 16th Century, Villajoyosa was important for shipbuilding, and was the target for many raids by Barbary pirates from Algeria. The 19th Century saw the beginnings of the chocolate industry for which the town is now famous and the 20th Century brought tourism on which the town now primarily depends.
Villajoyosa Fiestas: The main fiesta for which the town is famous is the Moors and Christians (Moros y Cristianos) festival held between 24th and 31st July, it has been held for over 250 years. Others include the Festival of St Isidore (May) and the Festival of the Archangel Michael held in September.
