The local industry has a long history and the museum housed in Villajoyosa tells the story of Don Valeriano López Lloret, who started his business back in 1881 when the town first started to import the cocoa bean from Ecuador in the eighteenth century. Nowadays you can taste many varieties of chocolate and although it is still a family business it has kept up with the times and with new technologies. Now that all the recipes have been computerized, the family is of the opinion that everything will always be perfect and consistent. A visit to the Valor factory or the museum is a must for chocolate fans and they even make the time to answer all the things you wanted to know about chocolate but did not like to ask. Truly a chocolate paradise and the enchanting pastries are the ideal accompaniment to a steaming hot chocolate drink.

Many times towns and villages are referred to as a ‘jewel’ but in the case of Villajoyosa the name actually means ‘Jewelled Town’ and this delightful haven can be found 10 kilometres south of Benidorm on the N-332 coast road and is certainly worth a visit. It retains its authentic Spanish charm and has another interesting facet in its brightly coloured houses, where there is a vibrant combination of colours including ochre, red, yellow and indigo blue and the reason for the brightly coloured facades is a very practical one. They were painted so that the fishermen could see their houses from the sea and the colours could guide them safely home.

There is a busy fishing harbour where there is also an afternoon fish market selling the best of the day’s catch. Indeed the economy of the town has depended on both shallow and deep sea fishing and as with so many other towns and villages along the coast, the sea has played a vital part in its history and culture and the overseas trade has also played its part in providing the imports for the towns other vital economic industry, chocolate.

The old walled town is a perfect place to stop and gently wander around and take a break, whilst organising the next step of your visit. Villajoyosa has some lovely beaches including the Centro beach, where the famous Moorish landing is celebrated, there is also El Paradis beach and whilst these two might be deemed to be the best beaches there are others such as Xarco beach with a watchtower and Torres beach with a Roman tower. There is a small cove used for diving and naturism, the Racó Conill and the Bol Nou and La Caleta beaches with their transparent waters are also worth visiting.

Villajoyosa is a pleasure to visit with a wonderful little market place and its colourful houses and narrow streets which seem to welcome you into the heart of this delightful Spanish town where there is a wonderful, happy atmosphere. The town is the historical capital of the Marina Baixa area and there is even a narrow gauge railway that connects the town to Alicante and Denia. It also houses a prime example of a Gothic church completed in the middle of the 16th century; and the bridge over the Rio Amadoria which was built in 1859, the Hercules Tower and the chocolate museum all play their part in providing an interesting and enjoyable visit.

Of course the Fiestas are spectacular with the major events taking place at the end of July and there are two pilgrimages each year, one in May in honour of St Isidore and one in September in honour of the Archangel Michael. Stretching as it does alongside the beautiful sandy palm lined beaches which bring you to the little fishing harbour, Villajoyosa provides a perfect day trip or perhaps a longer stay, but in either case you will not be disappointed with your choice of this colourful town as your destination.
